Foundations for health: nutrition, movement, sleep, and stress management
Sending well wishes as we welcome in 2026! The end of one year often brings reflection. We contemplate the past, considering highs and lows we may have experienced. From there many feel called to set intentions for the year ahead. Rather than choosing goals that may not be sustainable long term, perhaps consider bringing the focus back to basics.
Let’s look at proven and realistic ways to support our overall wellbeing. By managing the four pillars of health, listed below, we set the stage for increased vitality and quality of life. Begin with one pillar and one small change. For example, starting everyday with a glass of water will improve your hydration and nourish your cells. Or stowing your devices outside of the bedroom at night and using a non-lit alarm clock will support restful sleep. Once that change sticks, move to the next pillar and choose a new simple habit, and so on. We can build our best health one doable shift at a time.
4 Pillars of Health from Johns Hopkins University
Nutrition: your diet, or what you eat. Whether healthy or unhealthy, it impacts your body and the way it functions.
Physical Activity: the amount of movement and exercise you get. Exercise has numerous benefits and can help keep your body functioning the way it is supposed to.
Sleep: the time that your body uses to rebuild, regrow, and recover. If you deprive yourself of sleep, your body reacts in negative ways.
Behavioral Health: encompasses many topics including stress management and coping skills, mindfulness, anxiety, and overcoming barriers. Having a good support system as well as being able to recognize stress are necessary for good mental health.
